BATA GROUP

Established in 1894, BATA was created as a farmer’s cooperative and retains this structure today. Dedicated to supplying local farmers and those who live in the rural community, BATA specialises in offering quality products and services that support the livelihood and lifestyle of thousands of people.

BATA is a leading supplier of agricultural and energy products to the wider rural community. From their own livestock feed manufacturing and storage facilities, deliveries are made to farmers, small holders and homeowners. They also have a network of 16 Store locations, which consist of 11 BATA Country Stores, 2 Petrol Stations & Convenience Stores, Robinsons Equestrian in Malton, along with Country Stores at South West Lancashire Farmers (BATA SWLF) and Thompsons of York.

Over many years the BATA Group has grown as a financially sound and well managed business enabling the society to invest in property and equipment in order to serve the needs of a growing farming membership.

The association, registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act, h
as a Board of non-executive Directors who are elected by share members at the Annual General Meeting. The day-to-day activity of the organisation is delegated by the Directors to a management team who supply a local, reliable source of products and services which provide good value and service to customers and members. Any surplus profits are in part retained for future investment and distributed to members as interest and dividend.

 

2014

Founded in 1926, Thompsons of York proudly produce and supply the highest quality of feeds to British Farmers. Just a stone’s throw from the Jubilee Mill, Thompsons Country Store specialises in pet, equine and poultry feeds and accessories, wild bird food, gardening essentials, animal bedding, footwear & workwear and RAW pet feed. In 2014 BATA Ltd seized the opportunity to acquire the business and integrate Thompsons into the BATA Group, which has ensured future growth and investment for Thompsons.

2019

In 2019 BATA SWLF was formed, following BATA Ltd acquiring South West Lancashire Farmers, a farmer-owned and controlled agricultural merchants. Supplying animal feeds, fertilisers, seeds and all other farm requisites throughout Lancashire, Cumbria, North Midlands, Wales & Scotland, they also undertake grain trading from the office in Skelmersdale.

 

In late 2019 a purpose-built coarse mix manufacturing facility joined the BATA Group to enable us to manufacture and supply an extensive wide range of premium coarse mixes for pedigree and commercial livestock producers under the brand SWLF.

2022 
BATA Pocklington Storage Facility is prominent acquisition made in January 2022 and has significantly bolstered BATA's portfolio into the realm of agricultural commodity storage. Formerly under the ownership of COFCO International, this strategic acquisition marks a pivotal moment in our expansion efforts. With a focus on combinable crop services and storage, seamlessly integrating into the existing framework, enhancing our capabilities, and extending our reach within the agricultural sector.

 

Key highlights of the facility and its services include:

  • Up to 40,000 tonnes of grain store, across 10 silos each holding 1,000 tonnes and 10 flat stores.

  • Multiple Flat Stores to allow for the drying of combinable crops.

  • Testing & Analysis Laboratory, allowing BATA to offer the service of testing combinable crops Moisture, Specific weight, Nitrogen, Protein, Erucic acid and many more.

  • Rental Properties, made up of a combination of 26 agreement tenancies that include office space, storage bays and warehouses.

  • Public weighbridge, allowing oversized vehicles to pay a small fee for the use of our Avery Standard Weighbridge

A NEW ERA OF LEADERSHIP COMES NEW OPPORTUNITIES


Following some recent turbulent times, the BATA Group is proud to still remain as one of the largest agricultural cooperatives in the UK. With a renewed Board of Directors, Westmoore Recruitment is proud to be supporting the BATA Group to recruit a dedicated Finance Director to lead the organisation alongside the new Chief Executive.

 

FINANCE DIRECTOR

As Finance Director for the Group, you will provide strategic and financial guidance to ensure that the company's financial commitments are met. Developing all necessary policies and procedures to ensure sound financial management and control of the company’s business.

 

Your duties will include managing and leading two finance teams (based at BATA, Malton and Thompsons, York), overseeing internal controls, setting financial targets, developing a financial strategy, conducting feasibility studies, monitoring expenditure, overseeing annual insurance, monitoring cash flow, evaluating investments, and managing tax compliance.

Your skills in sound financial planning coupled with your ability to direct financial assets will assist the Group in implementing effective financial strategies, managing debt, improving revenue, maintaining a healthy financial position, and enhancing Member’s confidence.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Directing financial planning and strategy.

  • Analysing and reporting on financial performance.

  • Over-seeing audit and tax functions.

  • Developing and implementing accounting policies.

  • Preparing forecasts and comprehensive budgets.

  • Lead and develop the finance teams.

  • Reviewing departmental budgets with the Board, CEO, Directors and Managers.

  • Assessing, managing, and minimising risk to the Group.

  • Analysing complex financial data.

  • Managing internal controls

  • Develop a culture and strategy which aligns two finance teams, working from two separate offices. 
     

Requirements:

  • Fully qualified either ACA, ACCA or CIMA.

  • Proficiency in accounting software and implementation.

  • Financial management experience.

  • Good communication skills to both finance and non-finance professionals.

  • Strong analytical skills.

  • Broad knowledge of accounting principles.
